Derailment Spills 220 Tons of Grain in Minnesota

Cause of spill south of Cargill facility in Pipestone remains uncertain

The cause of the derailment that spilled 220 tons of grain (8,000 bushels) from two train cars last week remains uncertain, reports the Pipestone County Times.

Terry Wright, manager of the Cargill facility south of Pipestone, MN, said the company will conduct an internal investigation into what caused the cars to tip, but the results will not be made public. Wright said he could not speculate as to the cause.

He said Cargill employees and a third-party contractor spent the whole day Tuesday cleaning up the grain with a vacuum and loading it into trailers. Most of the grain will be cleaned and salvaged, but Wright said there will be some loss.
