Authorities Fear Collapse of Nebraska Grain Elevator

Around 100 remain evacuated in the area

Authorities have not let people who live nearest a northeast Nebraska grain elevator damaged in an explosion return to their homes, fearing the structure could collapse at any moment.

The Andersen Farms grain elevator in South Sioux City, NE, continued to smolder Wednesday, 24 hours after an explosion that seriously injured one employee and resulted in the evacuation of approximately 100 residents from their homes, reports the Sioux City Journal.

Authorities' main concern continues to be the structural integrity of the heavily damaged building after the explosion ripped a large hole in its side the day before.

South Sioux City Police Chief Ed Mahon said Wednesday morning that evaluations of the structure are continuing, with the concern that the approximately 235-foot-tall building could fall to the south or to the southeast.
