West Fargo, ND, city commissioners here have unanimously approved a property tax exemption for Cargill Inc. that would allow the agricultural company to save money on taxes for 10 years on a potential expansion of its plant at 250 Seventh Ave. NE.

Inforum reports the West Fargo plant intends to ask its corporate headquarters to invest in a $45 million to $55 million capital improvement plan that would include a new refinery, machinery and equipment.

The West Fargo plant was first built in 1980 as a sunflower processing plant, then added flax processing and canola processing in the late 1980s. It started refining oil in 1991. The expansion would allow Cargill to continue the refining process and one day package its own food-grade oil.
