Canadian Government Assists Farmers with High Levels of DON

Provincial government announces special assistance support plan for producers with financial hardship

There's help on the way for Ontario grain farmers, reports CBC.

The provincial government announced a special assistance support plan today for farmers with financial hardship due to the high levels of deoxynivalenol (DON) in this year's corn crops.

In Essex County, the industry has been hit harder than expected.

"Essex has had higher rates of DON than we had initially thought," Don Kabbes, manager at Great Lakes Grains Inc. told CBC. "We are seeing some fields testing in the 10 and 20 and 30 parts per million. As a grain elevator, we are not accepting those."
