Bruker Optics' Jason Erickson, application scientist, shared uses for NIR testing technology in a IPPE TECHTalk session Factors Affecting the Compositional Analysis of Feed Ingredients by NIR and how to Evaluate.
NIR stands for near-infrared spectroscopy and can be used in the feed industry to determinine the composition of feed ingredients or formulations and grain.
The testing method "quantifies the amount of light absorbed by a sample and correlates it to the composition of the sample," said Erickson.
NIR is ideal for feed testing because there is minimal to no waste, it's easy to use, and is capable of rapid analysis for multiple parameters.
Erickson said that not all samples are created equally, however, and that grain samples should be ground to a consistent micron in order the achieve repeatalbe, reproducable results.
