After Blast, Officials to Raze Elevator

Two dozen residents still displaced in Sioux City, NE

With high winds forecast this weekend, authorities pushed Thursday to raze the top portion of a badly damaged grain elevator within the next week, before it collapses from its own weight, reports the Sioux City Journal.

Nearly two dozen residents in South Sioux City, NE, evacuated after a massive explosion on Tuesday were forced to find other housing for a third straight day because of fears the compromised tower would tumble on top of their homes.

“The owner has been working really hard to get a demo team in there, that’s gonna be quick,” Police Chief Ed Mahon said of Andersen Farms. “What I was told in a meeting just before this (Thursday night news briefing) is from today, in seven days, that building will be down."
