Patricia Harris Ph.D., a veterinarian and a specialist in equine nutrition, was last month recognized for her professional achievements by the Equine Science Society (ESS). Dr. Harris is the director of science for MARS Horsecare.
The Equine Nutrition Research Award was presented to Dr. Harris during the 2013 ESS symposium in Mescalero, New Mexico. The award is sponsored by the American Feed Industry Association (AFIA), as part of its ongoing awards program that dates back to 1948. Dr. Jennifer Earing, nutritionist, Tennessee Farmers Cooperative, presented the award to Dr. Harris on behalf of AFIA.
Dr. Harris has served as the honorary secretary and president of the British Equine Veterinary Association and is currently on the board of the Equine Science Society. She has been awarded adjunct professorship of equine studies at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, diplomat status of the European College of Veterinary Clinical and Comparative Nutrition, and visiting professor status at the University of Liverpool, England. She is also an honorary professor in equine nutrition at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Science, University of Nottingham, England, and an adjunct professor at the University of Queensland, Australia.
She is currently supervising eight Ph.D. projects globally. To date, Dr. Harris has served as editor of several books and proceedings, the author or coauthor of approximately 30 book chapters and 160 peer-reviewed journal articles, and more than 400 abstracts.
Dr. Harris attended the University of Cambridge, England, where she received her master’s degree in veterinary medicine and subsequently became a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Further work at the Animal Health Trust resulted in her being awarded a Ph.D. for her research in the area of equine rhabdomyolysis by the University of Cambridge. She joined the WALTHAM® Centre for Pet Nutrition in 1995 and is responsible for the research carried out by the Equine Studies Group, which provides the science behind the SPILLERSÒ, BUCKEYEÒ NUTRITION and WINERGYÒ brands.
