Evacuation Prompted in South Dakota Due to Grain Elevator Fire
Officials temporarily closed off roads and evacuated 15 houses
An overnight grain elevator fire in the eastern South Dakota city of Miller prompted officials to temporarily close off roads and evacuate about 15 homes.
An employee at a nearby business reported the fire at Miller Grain about 11 p.m. Wednesday. Homes downwind from the scene were evacuated as a precaution about 1:30 a.m. because of concerns about strong winds and embers and also possible toxic fumes from rodent control chemicals inside the facility, authorities said. The 40-50 residents were allowed to return home about 3:30 a.m. Thursday.
