U.S. Department of Agriculture Celebrates 150th Anniversary
Founded in 1862 by President Abraham Lincoln
In 2012, USDA will commemorate and celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding in 1862, when President Abraham Lincoln signed into law an act of Congress establishing the United States Department of Agriculture.
The USDA has accomplished several milestones throughout its history, including in 1985 the Food Security Act established the Food for Progress Program, providing responsive food aid mechanism to encourage and support expansion of private enterprise in recipient countries and to help countries seeking to implement democratic and market reforms.
