FDA to Begin Restricting Some Antibiotic Use in April

Says the restrictions will ensure certain drugs will continue to work in humans

The Food and Drug Administration is restricting how farms use some antibiotics in poultry and other livestock to ensure that the drugs will continue to work when given to humans. The restrictions are less stringent than ones the agency proposed in 2008 and then reversed under pressure from industry veterinarians.

The new restrictions, which will take effect April 5, affect the class of drugs known as cephalosporins, which are used to treat pneumonia, skin infections and other illnesses in human medicine.
