AFIA Announces Poultry Nutrition Award Winner
Velmurugu Ravindran was recognized for his professional achievements
Velmurugu “Ravi” Ravindran, Ph.D., an international animal nutrition expert, was recognized for his professional achievements by the Poultry Science Association this week. Dr. Ravindran is a professor at the Institute of Food Nutrition & Animal Health at Massey University in New Zealand, where he specializes in poultry nutrition, with emphasis on nutrient metabolism, feed enzymes, feed evaluation, amino acid availability, gut flora management and early nutrition in poultry.
The Poultry Nutrition Research Award was presented to Dr. Ravindran during the annual PSA meeting July 19, 2011 in St. Louis, Mo. The award is sponsored by the American Feed Industry Association, as part of its continuing awards program that dates back to 1948. Dr. Bob Hill of H.J. Baker & Bro., Inc. of North Little Rock, Ark., presented the award to Dr. Ravindran on behalf of AFIA. Dr. Hill is a member of the AFIA Nutrition Committee.
Dr. Ravindran has had a notable international career. Prior to his work in New Zealand, he held academic and research positions in Sri Lanka, Canada, the U.S. and Australia. He is also a member of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations Expert Committee on new feed resources in animal nutrition.
Dr. Ravindran has published three books and 30 chapters and has been recognized from peers in over 1,000 citations. He has also served on the editorial boards of several prestigious academic journals, including British Journal of Nutrition, Animal Feed Science and Technology, Journal of Applied Poultry Research, and Journal of Animal Science.
Dr. Ravindran received his bachelor’s degree in agricultural science from the University of Sri Lanka and his master’s and doctorate degrees in animal nutrition from Virginia Tech University.
