The Port of Brownsville celebrated a significant milestone with a ceremonial groundbreaking event for its first tenant at the Port of Brownsville Business Park. Westa Inc. will invest $20 million to establish a cutting-edge wheat flour mill and wheat storage silos at the business park. The ceremony, held on Thursday, April 18, marked the beginning of construction on the 10-acre site located at the turning basin of the Brownsville Ship Channel.

Once operational, the facility is expected to employ 120 people, contributing to the local economy and job market. The decision to locate at the Port of Brownsville underscores the port's role as a key driver of economic development in the region.

"Westa Inc.'s investment in our business park is a testament to the Port of Brownsville's appeal as a strategic location for industrial development," said Esteban Guerra, Chairman of the Brownsville Navigation District. "We are thrilled to welcome Westa Inc. and anticipate further growth and diversification in the industries we attract."

The collaboration between the Port of Brownsville, Westa Inc., and the Council for South Texas Economic Progress (COSTEP) played a pivotal role in bringing this project to fruition. Recognizing the port's significance as an economic engine for the Rio Grande Valley, regional stakeholders worked together to facilitate the agreement.

"This project exemplifies the power of regional collaboration and demonstrates our commitment to driving economic prosperity in the Rio Grande Valley," stated William Dietrich, Interim Port Director and CEO. "The Port of Brownsville's infrastructure and services make it an attractive partner for businesses seeking growth opportunities."

Westa Inc. President Zaur Kafkas expressed confidence in the partnership, emphasizing the port's strategic advantages and commitment to excellence in service delivery.

With the Port of Brownsville Business Park still under construction, the port continues to review prospective tenants. Scheduled for completion by late Summer 2024, the business park offers prime industrial real estate opportunities with access to major transportation networks and international markets. Businesses interested in leasing opportunities are encouraged to visit the Port of Brownsville website for more information.
