The USDA’s August 1 bulletin reports that much of the nation experienced higher than average temperatures while receiving minimal to no rainfall.
Dry conditions elevated stress to a variety of developing crops throughout the country. In parts of the Northwest and Northern Plains however, these conditions were favorable for harvesting winter wheat crops.
Late in the week, parts of the Midwest into the Midsouth saw pockets of heavy rain showers and thunderstorms.
Similarly, heavy storms swept across the Great Lakes states and into the Northeast.
- Wheat harvest continues as crop maturity advances.
- Winter wheat harvest is 80% complete, 3 points behind the five-year average.
- 97% of spring wheat acres are headed, 1 point behind the five-year average. 42% are in good to excellent condition, 28 points behind last year.
- Barley is 97% headed, on par with the five-year average. 50% of barley is in good to excellent condition, 5 points behind last year.
- Oat acres are 35% harvested, 1 point above the five-year average.
- Corn development is highly variable within some fields.
- 84% of corn is silking, 2 points above the five-year average. Nationally, 55% of corn is in good to excellent condition, 6 points behind last year.
